You're Still Growing - Garden Lesson

Monique Stanley-Davy

Last summer I bought a tomato seedling for my balcony garden. It was my second time growing a tomato plant from seedling and I was excited. I set it up on a small DIY trellis and watched as it sprouted to the top of my balcony. I spent the summer and earlier fall harvesting cherry tomatoes. The sucess gave me the confidence to take it up a notch for my next tomato plant.

Instead of growing my tomato plant from seedling I was going to grow one from seed. In early November, I pulled some of the unripe tomatoes off of my now dying tomato plant and threw them in the soil. I followed up by brusting the tomatoes with my garden tool and spread the insides around in the dirt. I was winging it.

In the moment I made a split decision to use some soil from another pot to top off my tomato seeds. The other pots plant was offically pronounced dead. Two weeks without any sign of growth...

Fast forward to this spring, and I have returned from an Easter trip to a head of lettuce and 13 tomato seedlings. The Garden has a interesting way of teaching us things.

Lessons:

Patience is key, my lettuce needed time to grow. Just because I wasn't seeing any results, didn't mean it wasn't growing. You're still growing, even on days where you don't see any results. You are resilent, give yourself the time you deserve.

Compaionship encourages growth. Lettuce and tomatoes are compaion plants. They are both thriving. Surrond yourself with people and environments that encourage your growth.
